Ariel Sharon was the Prime Minister of Israel for five years, from February 2001 to January 2006, five intense years in which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has erupted into a bloody array.
Sharon, known as “The Bulldozer”, “The Father of Settlements”, was elected to be the Prime Minister right in the beginning of second Intifada, and immediately, as was expected of him, took an hawkish approach, and used a harsh hand towards the Palestinian uprising.
Four years later, in the summer of 2005, Sharon went against his “nature”, against his base, leading Israel to a unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria, evicting 25 Jewish settlements. The climax of his political career clearly imposed the everlasting conflict of the very core of the identity of the state of Israel: is it a Jewish-Democratic state or is it the realization of the biblical greater Israel?
Six months later Sharon gets into a coma, leaving unsolved questions behind - what made him change his ideological perception? Was it a rational political analysis made by an experienced General?
Made from archives and interviews, the film Blood and Land, is based on the three episodes T.V. series made for the Israeli Public Broadcast Corporation "Kan". Focusing on the events, decisions and emotion that led Sharon, one of the most controversial politicians in Israel, to the historical act of displacing Israeli settlements.
